Glazing White Cabinets

Our Bathroom (the Master Bath) has been on my to-do list since we moved into this house.  It's not horrible by any means, and it's a relatively nice bathroom size wise, it just definitely needed a few touches to make it our style.  The previous owners were had more of a "royal" style, and ... well, that's just not us.

We have these nice white cabinets and this dark black granite...and while each is nice it its own right, I don't really like them together.

So this weekend, I took my paint brush and my glaze and decided to do something about it.

I just painted the whole cabinet with the glaze, concentrating on the edges, and after a few minutes, wiped off the areas that I didn't want to be too dark.  I took a small corner of the towel to go along the edges so that I could leave most of the glaze in the crevices.

I like this look so much better than just the solid white with the solid black...minus the glaring white strip on the bottom that I just realized I still need to glaze.  Oops!  I might go back with a small paint brush and make more of a clean line along drawer creases, but this was plenty good enough for now!

What do you think?  Do you like the added depth and dimension or did you like the crisp clean look better?   This is just one step of a multiple step bathroom makeoever, so stay tuned to see what else I've got up my sleeve.

Hope everyone had a great Halloween!  Happy Monday!

  17. I love the look- are the cabinets that melamine finish, and did you top coat it with anything so it won't rub off when you clean it? I'd love to do this in my kitchen, white is just not my style at all.

  20. I'm with you- I think it's a much softer look with the glazed cabinets next to the black. It'll be fun to see the whole bathroom redo, too!

  21. I have the exact same cabinets in my kitchen, and would LOVE to do this! You did an amazing job!
I am just a little scared, though... what glaze did you use, and can it be cleaned off it is looks terrible? lol
And I echo what Ellen Leigh said -- can you clean them after the glaze is dry and you don't have to worry about it coming off? With five kids in the house, the doors have to be wiped down -- a LOT!

  25. Thanks for all of the compliments ladies!

I used Ralph Lauren's faux glaze tinted in smoke (got it from Home Depot) to glaze.

As for the finish of my cabinets, they do have the melamine top coat, which means if you scrub really hard, it is possible to pull the glaze off the cabinets. I'm going to try to top coat them with some poly this week and see if that fixes it. I wiped them down with soap and water and the glaze stayed, but if I put some HEAVY elbow grease into it, the glaze will come off. If you have wood cabinets, this shouldn't be an issue at all.
